With shared strengths and aspirations, the two dynamic cities began to deepen collaboration in commerce, technology, education, and other areas. With the objective to promote mutual understanding and peace through people-to-people relationships, the two cities began to recognize “friendship city” status in 2013. This coincided with advancement of a crucial foundation for collaboration between Durham and Kunshan: the establishment of Duke Kunshan University. The formal sister cities relationship was officially cemented in 2024 as the 288th such partnership between the US and China.
